About the Role The Senior Legal Counsel will report into the Head of Legal and will support the Group legal team on a broad range of commercial contracts, agreements and data protection issues. To be successful in this role you will be a qualified lawyer with solid general commercial law experience, and any media background will be beneficial. Key Responsibilities A broad range of commercial contracts: content licensing, content acquisition, contributor contracts, syndication and content distribution, releases, intellectual property licenses, book agreements, consultancy agreements, data processing agreements, brand licensing, sponsorship agreements, events and exhibition contracts, traditional and digital advertising, e-commerce, technology, software development, software licensing, cloud-based services, competitions and promotions, agency agreements, whitelable agreements, online affiliate agreements, co-branded reader promotions, multi-media agreements, supply agreements, distribution contracts, production agreements Understanding of data protection issues. Structure, draft and negotiate a variety of agreements relating to the above, the distribution of content on multimedia channels from traditional print and website, to mobile platforms and social media channels Advice and counsel on a variety of business, legal and regulatory matters, including ASA/CAP Code, ICO etc Understand and critically evaluate multifaceted agreements and concisely and precisely distill information for clients In addition to the legal team, work closely with the data team, subscriptions team, cyber security team, compliance/governance team, with a fundamental understanding of the complexities of the regulatory environment and an ability to navigate those hurdles in order to deliver business goals Independently manage transactions from inception through conclusion Supervise professional staff and outside counsel as necessary Essential Skills Minimum of 5-6 years of relevant in-house or law firm experience Excellent drafting, with an emphasis on plain English drafting, negotiation and organizational skills Extensive and in-depth knowledge of contract and general commercial law is required knowledge of data protection, GDPR and e-Privacy regulations etc Knowledge of intellectual property, technology, privacy and internet, and consumer protection laws are strongly preferred A workable understanding of the data processing, financial promotions laws and regulations Good commercial acumen and knowledge of industry practices Excellent interpersonal skills, good team player and good team leader Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal clients and external parties Ability to manage a high volume of transactions, work to tight deadlines and work independently Benefits The nature of our industry means life at the Telegraph Media Group is fast-paced, demanding, and interesting.
