Power Engineer

Our Power Engineers are cyber warfare specialists who are at the heart of the information battle, and are responsible for electrical infrastructure management and installation that is vital to the success of battlefield communications. You will prepare, engineer, maintain complex Power Distribution Systems to ensure that frontline troops and their commanders can communicate on deployment worldwide.
Our Power Engineers are trained to the highest level, so you will be able to engineer a range of systems including Field Electrical Power Distribution Systems (FEPDS), Lighting and Power Distribution Systems (LAPDS) , Field Electrical Power Systems (FEPS) Generators, Lightweight Field Generators (LFG), and be trained to such a level where you will be able to exploit all avenues of opportunity.
On completion of training, you will go on your assigned unit and may be sent onto specialist courses to enable you to become an expert in your field. You will receive a range of civilian recognised qualifications up to degree level. There are opportunities for you to apply your knowledge, skills and experience to specialist roles such as Airborne Paratrooper or Special Forces Communicator.

WORLD-CLASS TRAINING
Step 1
You'll start with your initial military training which will teach you how to be a soldier - this will cover everything from fieldcraft to handling a rifle. If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years 5 months), you’ll do a 23-week basic military training course at Harrogate. If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years 1 month), you’ll do the regular 14-week adult basic training.
Step 2
Then you will study to become a Power Engineer at the Royal School of Signals in Blandford. Here will begin the technical training you will need to fulfil your future role. You will study electrical principles, engine fundamentals, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), IET BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, introduction to IET BS2391-52 Inspecting and Testing, Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC), basic power planning and operation and use of hand and power tools. With this new knowledge, you will learn how to supply, maintain and manage Electrical Power Systems using systems designed for military use and civilian bought off of the shelf items. In addition to this you will study the management, maintenance and operation of the equipment used regularly by the Royal Signals. You’ll practice these skills in a variety of environments in conjunction with developing your leadership skills to allow you to fulfil the role of required of you.

- Earn a starting salary of around £16,844 during Basic Training which will rise to £21,425 after completing 26 weeks’ training or after completing your Initial Trade Training, if less than 26 weeks
